So, do you think it’s time for a change?

Everything is changing and will continue to change

Change in some form, has been upon us ever since we figured out fire or the first stone tools. The rate of change today is arguably faster than it has been ever before. Modern businesses need to adapt to the speed which technology changes. Although for new business, skipping some steps and expressing directly by making use of the latest technology available on market can be a huge differentiator, for big companies with complicated structures and legacy systems this is the true challenge. Either way, new KPIs must be born to measure efforts in change, empathy or community impact outside organizations while happiness, synergies or reliability should be measured inside.

As our technology, communication, transportation and others became increasingly fast and efficient, the old “tradition” around which cultures, economics and politics have been defined and organised, are becoming mill stones. Like the industrial revolution of the early 19th century, the impactful evolution is not happening by chance but rather as a convergence of multiple trends. Today those includes Augmented Analytics, Big Data, AI, Blockchain, IoT and ubiquitous computing power with unlimited potential. One result of that development speed is disruption.

Although the sources of disruption are many, one is obvious. As tech innovation accelerate, people, organisations and communities are more interconnected than ever before. As a result, we communicate more, share more, complain more, celebrate, ideate and expect more. We also develop BS filters to ignore ads and commercials, we don’t believe in the one business’s marketing hype anymore, we don’t want to eat junk ingredients anymore, no physical store, no spam, no TV. We want more of what we like, when we want it, how we want it and at he price we want. So good luck New Company!

For businesses this is like a huge puzzle and the challenge is on management. Management, as a role, was designed for a very different set of business needs like improving economic efficiency, deal with repetitive tasks performance and maximising labor productivity but all in a predictable environment. VUCA was’t around and neither was the many crises of competition, economy, job creation, social development or sustainability. The skilled resource crisis is certainly more pressing than the economic crisis and is getting worse as population and their level of consumption grows.

But there is also a crisis of trust and credibility on one side and responsibility and purposeless on the other side, that the management solutions applied in case of emergency no longer cut it. As a result, proven management tools and techniques are being questioned for their validity and effectiveness. We need a new approach, a smarter, human, cultural, social, and more agile than before that puts team innovation at the core of every decision that a business would take. And if that kind of construction should be build to last then extra attention is needed when putting together the very first bricks.

The transformation is happening there where you can see and measure intentional development of competences and capabilities, trust and passion to learn, fast adaptation and innovation in the changing context, and prioritize growth in order to achieve sustainable success.

Change management, strategic innovation, extreme leadership are no longer aspirations or coffee talks and must be acknowledged with a more pragmatic and assertive approach. There is more than planning products, services, brand extensions, technological inventions or reorganization of the org chart and job descriptions. It’s about imagining, organizing, mobilizing, and competing in new ways.

However, this is not only practical; It requires relinquishing the illusion of control that lies at the very foundation of most management trainings and business practices, from an over-reliance on information and uncertainty reduction towards intentional interaction. Interacting and interconnecting are the key ability to create and experience meaning, purpose and happiness. All you need is to recognize the need and opportunity, and to make a commitment to shift your mindset. Are you ready?
